Alistair Deane has always taken a keen interest in art and while still at school
in Edinburgh had a painting hung at the annual
exhibition of the Royal Scottish Society of
Painters in Watercolours. However, during
his subsequent career as a graphic designer,
running his own design and print consultancy,
he seldom reached for his sketch pad and paints.
Instead he was directing and working closely
with some of the country’s leading artists.
It was only after he was given a box of acrylics
as part of his retirement present that his
passion for painting was rekindled.
Compared to watercolours, Alistair finds acrylics
very strong and direct, using a pallet knife
or even a domestic paintbrush to create the
mark making that give his pictures their atmosphere
and sense movement and action. He concentrates
mostly on landscapes but will attempt still
life when forced to at the many classes and
art clubs that he now attends in his retirement!
